The new village of Charlton Down occupies the site of the old Herrison Hospital. The hospital was closed by the NHS during the 1980’s.

Tetlow King were employed as members of a working party to carry out masterplanning and architectural design work for the site, development of which was broken into eight phases. The development included new residential units, conversion of existing historic buildings for residential, employment and social uses and a Village Hall and Cricket Pavilion.

The size and strong architectural styling of the retained buildings formed the basis for the design treatments applied to other buildings throughout the site. The inherited landscape which is dominated by mature trees was a principle generator of the spaces, block layout and circulation routes found in the masterplan. Services provided included masterplanning, historic building renovation & conversion, the outline planning application, detailed planning application and construction drawings.
