| Originally the site of Princess Margaret’s Hospital the development is located to the south of Swindon off Okus Road with spectacular views across open countryside to the south.
The original hospital buildings have now been demolished to make way for a contemporary designed residential scheme of 520 units, a mixture of flats and apartments. The design is focused around a symmetrical oval shaped space which is the high density core of the development enclosed by four and a half storey apartments over undercroft parking. As well as the private residential accommodation the development includes a 70 bed nursing home along Okus Road and a retail unit facing onto one of the squares.
Due to the important and sensitive nature of this site Tetlow King prepared a Development Brief working in collaboration with the developer client and the local authority. Tetlow King successfully negotiated the formal adoption of the brief, outline planning consent and the subsequent reserved matters application.
The design of the scheme reflects then local authorities and the developers desire to provide an exciting and forward looking scheme which would act as a ‘modal’ for new development in the area. As such a strong emphasis is placed on the use of modern materials to give visual interest to the high quality public spaces, streets and lanes which gives a strong sense of character and identity. |
